NEW! Uruguay, South America

José Ignacio · Estancia Vik · Garzón Hills · Montevideo

Join us for 8 languid and delightful days in South America

José Ignacio: a small fishing village with a chic summer crowd and a spirit of relaxation and presence. We arrive at the Atlantic shore, walk the point at low tide, eat grilled fish steps from where it was caught, and let the wind begin its work of undoing whatever we carried here from home. The pace slows.

From the coast we move inland to an estancia just beyond the village, where the grass runs uninterrupted to every horizon. For two days we ride, explore on horseback, and can even try our hand at polo — that improbable, intoxicating game that makes more sense here, on this land, than anywhere else on earth. We sit with gauchos at long wooden tables, pass mate hand to hand, and eat slowly by firelight.

Then comes Garzón: a sweet, sleepy art hamlet so unhurried it feels like a rumor — a handful of cobblestones, an exceptional restaurant, bougainvillea spilling over whitewashed walls. Here we tuck into a remote chacra for a creativity retreat led by Heidi Lender, exploring writing and photography as ways of truly seeing — the quality of afternoon light, the story a meal tells before it is eaten, the texture of a life lived close to the ground. Pages fill. The camera finds things the eye alone would have missed. Wine pours easily and conversation deepens, and somewhere near the fire, the line between stranger and friend quietly disappears. Dropping out of the ordinary and into the elemental, we discover what Uruguay has quietly known all along: that the creative life and the good life are, in the end, the same thing.
