Vintage Portuguese Shepherd’s Blanket
These tightly woven natural sheep’s wool mantas with natural brown wool stripes are a keepsake. Like anything woven over 50 years ago, it has a recognizable artisan quality that you find only if you get lucky. It’s a thing of the past. Run your hand over it, and it will tell you stories about the Alqueva sky, like dark velvet cloaked by a huge blanket of stars right in the middle of the Alentejo.
It fits right in with an economy of living. A throw on the end of your bed. A soft layer on your floor that you throw a sheepskin on for meditation. It can be taken rolled up on a hike for a picnic or to lay on in open space for star gazing. it can be wrapped around you like a cape by the fireside. It’s warm and substantial. It can be folded up just to look at.
The Alentejo captured my heart. It’s an ancient place on the interior of central Portugal. A softly rugged landscape with gentle people, ancient olive trees, vines and rustic food. It’s one of our treasured culinary adventures every year.
I like to find one of a kind things. These are a rare find.
(Now just the one blanket left: multiple stripes throughout)
