Tribal Berber from Ait Ouaouzguite
Tribal Berber carpet from Ait Ouaouzguite, High Atlas mountains.
As was true of the early middle Atlas, the tendency toward overall patterning in a borderless field was to give the effect of limitless extension of space. Just like the feeling one has traveling through the wide open territory of Morocco. At times there is little to disturb one’s eye. And when something does appear, it’s interesting. A few lone donkeys. A man in a jalaba walking in the far off distance. Living with this carpet offers symbolism of space. A silent language that those who need it understand.
9’4” x 4’6”
Vintage circa 1960
