Thoughts from Florence…

June 7, 2016 By Peggy Markel

firenze dinner

L’abc 2013. 100% Sangiovese made by wine lovers Adriano Zago, Bernardo Conticelli and Ciro Beligni from vines grown 600 meters high in Lamole, in Chianti Classico. Vinified first in stainless steel, then terracotta amphora, then wood. It’s a very pretty wine with high cherry notes which were gorgeous on the palate with some organic, free-range Iberico ham from Finca Montefrio that I brought back from Seville and a savory pate that I made with capers and dried pachino cherry tomatoes from my recent trip to Sicily. It was fun to share with Bernardo who was sweet to bring me his wine to taste.

The Black Pigs of Huelva

April 20, 2014 By Peggy Markel

Visiting an organic pig farm for the infamous black “Iberico” was insightful.

We took a walk with the pigs, free range under the acorn trees. They came quickly, taking a trail that was at first far away, then slowly and deliberately coming nearer. Snorting and trotting, with their ears flopping at the tips, it’s too bad they are not used for pets, for they are in some sense of the word, affectionate. I don’t like the notion of eating pigs or pork for this matter, but it’s hard not be convinced that this meat is the most succulent and dare I say, friendly? It can be approached infinitum — sausage, jamon serrano, prosciutto, pork loin, pork chops, pork belly, bacon, pancetta, pork rinds, trotters, head cheese, and it goes on and on. It seems to me, like the chicken, that pigs were put on earth to eat.  [Read more…]

Travel Wisdom. This is it. As is. Au naturel. Packing yet once again. Is her suitcase half empty or half full? Where is she going? For how long? Stay tuned. Together we are going to cover some miles. 🧚‍♀️⛵️🤸‍♀️ . . . i want my outlook to be half full and my suitcase half empty. Either way there is auspicious spaciousness. With aging comes wisdom. It’s the only thing worth cultivating. Well .. that and relationships and gardens and things that matter. Like my mind and heart. Everything matters. Sunshine after days of rain. . . Yet, I chose to go to the cinema this afternoon for the #middleeastfestival . The first short was a film on Syria. “A day in Aleppo”, by Ali Alibrahim. We can’t imagine what life is like on a daily basis and why it is happening. Random bombings happen frequently. There aren’t enough emergency vehicles to handle the wounded. It’s a reality we can’t imagine. “Sons”, another short by Italian s Antonio Chiavacci and Benedetto Ferrara shows how in years of siege and war, the children are always the first victims. The following films were about displaced Syrians living in other border countries, and how displaced they feel and how misunderstood they are. . . Other films came from filmmakers from Israel, Palestine, Iraq and Iran. I particularly liked one animated film called “Rope”. Metaphorical animation on the concepts of fear and submission. . . . I like to take pictures. Usually portraying beauty and food and things that delight. It’s not because I’m not in touch with the rest of the world, it’s because I am in touch, and very touched by the world, that I do my best to share something meaningful or pretty. It’s what these filmmakers are also trying to do. To show humanity in places of extreme suffering. . . . #middleastfestival #florenceitaly #awarenessiskey #gratitudeiskey #activismiskey #expressioniskey
Makena and Judah’s first train ride through the introterra of the Colorado Rockies. They were born here, so they are getting to know their home land. We have already passed a herd of elk. We’ve seen hawks hiding in snow covered trees. Long vistas and huge rock formations up close. The observation deck gives quite the view. Then lunch. I love the dining car on trains. Keeping my eyes on the world and writing about it. #buttinchair In need of some soul food?? One of my fondest memories of spring, was picking wild asparagus down dirt roads in the Maremma in southern Tuscany. . Get the recipe for Sformato di Asparagi -asparagus flan- directly on the blog. Link in bio! . . Oh, but if you prefer something c l e a n s i n g ... pop onto my stories for A1 super detox veggie broth tonic. . Keep @gowithpeggy in mind as you hunt and gather your next travel. Walking through Florence is like taking a walk in the mind of the great Renaissance architects who had lofty ideals of classic beauty as balanced proportions, arches and domes. The reminder is somewhat sophisticated. It stimulates a good philosophical conversation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #iloveitaly #visititalia #italygram #igersitaly #igersitalia #italia #underaloggia #cafelifeinflorence # #igersfirenze #florence #firenze #adayinflorence #tuscanybuzz #igerstoscana #renaissancearchitecture #brunelleschi #conversation #gowithpeggy #neoplatonism His and Her G & T. from the cart. Monkey 47, fever tree tonic, fennel, lemon, radish.. and Manon, fever tree elderflower tonic, rosemary, orange. To be exact I say get yourself over to @corrida_boulder. Women don’t exist on a view alone we need pithy conversation to match a toothsome meal. Thank you @bryandcolorado for such a welcoming, delicious place for authentic Spanish food and drink in Boulder. I’ll be back to sip sherry and vermouth on the veranda. The Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo, also known as Palazzo Matteucci is a palace located on Borgo degli Albizi 26 in central Florence. The palace was designed by the architect Bartolomeo Ammanati. What you see is called Grafitti di Qualità. Must have been radical back then. Swipe for a view of the building with a Medici Crest.
